We are proud to share that our founder, Mary Cortani, has been recognized as one of Assembly District 28’s 2025 Mental Health Heroes by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin.
Mary, an Army veteran and the heart behind Operation Freedom Paws, was honored for her unwavering dedication to supporting veterans and individuals living with invisible wounds of war and trauma. Through our unique program that pairs service dogs with clients, Mary has helped transform countless lives with compassion, advocacy, and care.
The award was presented during Assembly member Pellerin’s annual Care Fair, held this year on Saturday, September 20, 2025, on the lawn at 701 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz. The event, which rotates throughout the district each year, highlights local wellness resources and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of destigmatizing mental illness and raising awareness around suicide prevention.
Mary was recognized alongside 11 other inspiring community members and organizations, including mental health advocates, clinicians, volunteers, educators, and veterans. Each honoree was nominated by community members for their outstanding work in breaking down stigma and connecting people with care.
Assemblymember Pellerin shared:
“I am proud to honor these Mental Health Heroes who remind us every day that prevention and compassion save lives. Their dedication helps break down stigma, connect people with care, and build a stronger, healthier community across Assembly District 28.”
We are deeply grateful to see Mary’s lifelong mission of healing recognized on such a meaningful stage. Her work at Operation Freedom Paws continues to be guided by the belief that four paws, two feet, one team can change lives.
